Sandwich
A sandwich is a meal consisting of vegetables, eggs, or meat placed between slices of bread. It also means squeezing someone or something between two objects or people.
Here are a few examples:
(1) "I ate a vegetable sandwich and went back to work."
(2) "Rehema House is sandwiched between Lonrho House and IPS Building."
(3) "The girl is sandwiched between two burly men in the back of the car."
As used in the above sentences, the origin of the word sandwich is associated with John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, a region of Kent in the UK. John was a gambling addict. He did not like to walk over to the dining room of the casino to take meals, so he asked the waiter to bring him a meal he could eat while seated at the gambling table. The waiter brought him a ham squeezed between two slices of bread, and he liked it.
When the waiter asked those at his table, "What will you eat?" they replied, "the same as the Earl of Sandwich." However, those at nearby tables only heard the word "Sandwich", so when the waiter asked them what they would eat, they just said "a sandwich."
